New 1,700-Square-Foot Mural will Celebrate 5 Points’ Diversity and LGBTQ Contributions

Commissioned to local muralist, Shaun Thurston, the mural will adorn Lomax Street at the 5 Points intersection

Jacksonville, Fla. (July 24, 2026) – A community task force has banded together in an effort to beautify 5 Points with a new mural to commemorate the neighborhood’s past, while building optimism for its future. The 1,700-square-foot mural will celebrate the neighborhood’s diversity and affirm its LGBTQ community by paying homage to past generations and the foundation of acceptance and safety they built through confidence, resilience, and unity.

The task force has commissioned local artist Shaun Thurston to design and paint the mural, which will live at 1059 Park Street, on the southwest-facing exterior wall of Sunburn Cannabis. Thurston is a Jacksonville native and has painted murals in prominent locations throughout the metro, including EverBank Stadium, Cummer Museum of Arts & Gardens, PGA TOUR global headquarters, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Local paint company, Paint Maven, began cleaning and other priming work on July 23 to prepare the surface for Thurston’s work. Thurston plans to begin on July 25 and anticipates the mural to be completed sometime during the next month. 

The project is on private property and is funded with private contributions, including from Riverside Avondale Preservation, AIDS Memorial Project of Northeast Florida, Jax LGBT Chamber of Commerce, and the LGBTQ Alliance.
